World War II Lookout Tower

Sunset Blvd, Lower Township, NJ 08204

(800) 275-4278

Fire Control Tower No. 23 was part of the immense Harbor Defense of the Delaware system known as Fort Miles, playing a major part in coastal defenses during World War II. Built in 1942, the tower was one of 15 that helped aim batteries of coastal artillery, stretching from North Wildwood, N.J. to Bethany Beach, DE. Four towers were in Cape May County, NJ.

The towers, four to five story round-base concrete buildings with flat observation decks, were set up as baselines to triangulate the position of suspicious ships or submarines. Fire Control Tower #23 is New Jersey’s last remaining restorable World War II tower. The tower is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
