Located in the Franklin-Sterling Hill Mining District known for its rich zinc ore and florescent mineral deposits, the museum explores the story of the area's mining history and earth science research. The museum is situated on the grounds of the Sterling Mine, a former New Jersey Zinc Company mine, which successfully operated as New Jersey’s last underground mine until it ceased operating in 1986. The Sterling Hill Mining Museum is the only location in the state where an underground mine and its attendant facilities have been preserved almost intact and are open to the public.
