Ringwood Manor is in a National Historic Landmark District with historical significance that stretches from Native American occupation to early 20th century industry. Surrounded by the Ramapo Mountains, Ringwood Manor attracted ironmasters for over 200 years who were drawn to the area’s rich magnetite iron deposits. During the Gilded Age, Ringwood Manor served as a large summer estate for iron suppliers Peter Cooper and Abram S. Hewitt and their families. In 1938, the house, its contents, and the surrounding property were donated by the families to the State of New Jersey to serve as a museum and state park. With original historical structures, gardens, and landscapes spanning 582 acres - and extensive historical collections illustrating family life, community, industry and culture in the area - Ringwood Manor is a unique repository of American history. Today, it’s a central part of Ringwood State Park and is overseen by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Parks and Forestry.
