Completed in 1764 by the East Jersey Proprietors, the Proprietary House is the only remaining official royal governor’s mansion still standing in the original thirteen colonies. It was home to William Franklin, New Jersey’s last Royal Governor and son of Benjamin Franklin. Over the centuries, the building has served as a private mansion, hotel, retirement home, boarding house, and now a museum. It is owned by the State of New Jersey and the museum is operated by the non-profit Proprietary House Association. Proprietary House is listed on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places.
