Monmouth Battlefield State Park preserves and interprets a rural 18th-century landscape of hilly farmland and hedgerows on which the battle was waged.

The battle, fought on June 28, 1778, was the largest single-day battle of the war with nearly 25,000 men involved. Many women were also involved in the battle, performing duties such as laundering, cooking, and nursing in exchange for rations. Mary Hays, best known as “Molly Pitcher,” even helped her husband’s gun crew run cartridges from the ammunition box to the loader during the Battle of Monmouth.

The Battle of Monmouth was the first pitched battle success of Washington's army in the war. It was the last major battle of the Revolution in the north. The next time Washington's army would face the British would be at Yorktown in the battle that would bring the war to an end.

Besides being the site of the Revolutionary War Battle, a section of what now makes up Monmouth Battlefield State Park was historically used as Camp Vredenburg. Camp Vredenburg was a training camp during the American Civil War where over 3,000 New Jersey Volunteers trained.
