Hunter-Lawrence-Jessup House Museum at Gloucester County Historical Society

The 18-room Hunter-Lawrence-Jessup House was built in 1765 by prominent Revolutionary War era Judge John Sparks. Over the years, the house has served as home to many distinguished residents, including Captain James Lawrence of “Don’t Give Up the Ship” fame (still the motto of the US Navy), and Reverend Andrew Hunter, Revolutionary War era chaplain. Since 1924, the home has been maintained by the Gloucester County Historical Society as a museum of local history and features rotating exhibits on South Jersey history. Permanent collections encompass art glass, toys, furniture from several time periods, portraiture, farming implements, military and Native American artifacts, the Betsy Ross hearth, and fiber arts and textiles, including samplers, quilts and fashions. Additionally, the Gloucester County Historical Society Edith E. Hoelle Memorial Library located on site offers the largest genealogical collection in South Jersey, including family papers, genealogical manuscripts, photographs, maps and general ephemera.
