The Dr. James Still Historic Office Site and Education Center preserves the legacy of Dr. James Still, known as the Black Doctor of the Pines, through educational programming. Dr. James Still was born in 1812 in Indian Mills, New Jersey, to former enslaved Africans from the state of Maryland. Despite being a self-educated man born into poverty, Dr. Still became one of the wealthiest men of his time in Burlington County.

In 1843, he purchased a still and began distilling roots and herbs. On a trip to Philadelphia around the same time, Dr. Still purchased two books on medical botany and began practicing medicine by accident, agreeing to treat a sick man in exchange for sassafras. Eventually, Dr. Still began distilling less and healing more, and by 1845, he had decided to focus solely on his medical practice. In 1855, as his practice flourished, Dr. Still built his office and first home, followed by a new house constructed with modern amenities in 1869.

Dr. Still died in 1882 and his home was demolished in 1932, but his office building remains on the property. In 2006, the State of New Jersey purchased the historic site.
