Established in 1905, the Cumberland County Historical Society preserves and promotes the history and heritage of the county through acquisitions, collections, exhibits and research, educational programs, and publications, for the benefit of current and future generations. The site consists of the Wood Mansion which serves as the Society’s headquarters; the Gibbon House Museum and barn; the John Dubois Maritime Museum displaying artifacts relating to the waterways of the area; the Warren and Reba Lummis Genealogical and Research Library that features a vast collection of genealogical material, rare books, deeds and maps; and the Alan Carman Ewing Museum of Prehistory that houses Native American artifacts from Southern New Jersey collected by avocational archaeologist Alan Carman. All the buildings are within walking distance of each other on Ye Greate Street, a charming treelined street located within the Greenwich Historic District that features original eighteenth century houses.
