Captain James Lawrence House
459 High Street, Burlington, NJ 08016

Located within the campus of the Burlington County Historical Society, the Captain James Lawrence House (circa 1740) is the family home of the American naval hero of the War of 1812. Born on October 1, 1781, Burlington City’s favorite son was the youngest of eleven children who went on to command the USS Chesapeake in battle against the HMS Shannon. When the Chesapeake was boarded and Lawrence mortally wounded, he gave his famous last command: “Don’t give up the ship!” Today, this is the Navy’s battle cry and the motto of the City of Burlington. A flag featuring the command flies in his honor along Burlington’s Riverfront Promenade.
Through a partnership with the Burlington County Historical Society, the Lawrence House has been transitioned into a military history museum under the leadership of the Armed Forces Heritage Museum (AFHM), a 501(c)(3) all-volunteer non-profit organization whose mission is to "Preserve, Honor, and Educate the public on the military history of New Jersey and the neighboring regions." This museum features exhibits, interactive displays, and video documentaries from military periods that include the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and WWI/WWII. Additionally, there are tributes to NJ Gold Star Mothers/Families and NJ Medal of Honor recipients. There is also a gift shop and coffee canteen. Docents are available to guide visitors through the museum experience free of charge, although donations are requested.
