Bainbridge House

158 Nassau Street, Princeton , NJ 08544

609-258-378

The Bainbridge House, constructed in 1766 on its existing site by Job Stockton, is one of the oldest buildings in Princeton and one of the best preserved examples of mid-Georgian architecture in the region. The house served as lodging for members of the Continental Congress in 1783 and witnessed the birth of William Bainbridge, a hero of the War of 1812. Owned by Princeton University since 1877, the home served as the Princeton Public Library for over 50 years. From 1967 until 2015, the Historical Society of Princeton used the house as its headquarters before moving to Updike Farm. Bainbridge House now operates as the Princeton University Art Museum which serves as a gateway to the visual arts at Princeton.
