The King Store presents a unique opportunity to visit and tour a remarkably preserved time capsule of a late-nineteenth century general store and post office. The King Store is a two-and-a-half story stone store built during the 1820s. It is a cultural gem within the growing statewide Morris Canal Greenway, and represents the state’s coal and canal industries. The store features period merchandise on its shelves, a built-in ice box to preserve perishables, and a rope-operated wooden hoisting wheel to move heavy goods into and out of the store.
Located across a landscaped two-acre yard is the King Homestead, a Queen Anne-style residence built in 1878. The house boasts period furnished rooms reflecting the lifeways and customs of the period including a Victorian-era girl’s bedroom and a formal dining room graced with pastoral landscape murals believed to have been created by an English artist who allegedly boarded in the house. Following a tour of the King Store and Homestead, rest on the spacious front porch to enjoy the gentle breezes and imagine days gone by.
